The province enforces standards that mirror — and in places exceed — Health Canada's national guidelines, and it backs them with a testing regime so comprehensive that Ontario publishes more per-system results than almost any other jurisdiction this site tracks. What that clean headline *doesn't* capture is the nuance: lead is a genuine, well-understood concern that comes from your house rather than the lake, disinfection byproducts rise in systems that draw surface water, and the province's reliance on groundwater means mineral content varies enormously from region to region. The short version — a province that takes water seriously

But in older neighbourhoods — and Ontario has plenty, from Toronto’s Victorian stock to small-town downtowns — water travels the last stretch through lead service lines, or through homes built with lead solder before its use was curtailed. That’s where traces enter.

Three habits cover most of the exposure, and they cost nothing:

  1. Flush after disuse. Water that’s been sitting in the pipes overnight has the highest lead concentration. Run the cold tap until it runs noticeably colder before drinking or cooking.
  2. Use cold water only. Lead dissolves more readily in hot water. Never cook or make formula with water from the hot tap.
  3. Know your home. If you’re in a house built before the mid-1950s, assume lead is a possibility and consider a certified filter for the taps you drink from.

Disinfection byproducts — the surface-water signature
